A free reading app for kids who just learned their phonics sounds: every word in a story can be sounded out, tap a word for its sounds. Bring your own agent (MCP). Cloudflare Workers.

Yara Reads is a free, open-source reading web app for kids who've just learned phonics. Every word in its stories can be tapped to show sound-by-sound decoding help (dots, bars, arcs) with audio. Stories are strictly checked against the sounds the child knows, parents can toggle which sounds are learned, and an MCP-connected agent can generate checked, illustrated custom stories. It's a Cloudflare Worker (D1 + R2) PWA, self-hostable, works signed out.

Why now: It was just shared on Hacker News as a Show HN: a parent-built open-source phonics reader whose standout hook is 'bring your own agent' story generation via MCP, plus a pronunciation-aware story checker.

Who it is for: Parents (especially technical ones) of children who have finished phonics basics and need decodable books they can actually read.
