Anthrax

The 2001 anthrax attacks, in which letters laced with the bacteria killed five people in the United States weeks after 9/11, are being remembered on the 25th anniversary. Commentators are revisiting the investigation, the unanswered questions around the case, and its lasting impact on American public health and biosecurity preparedness.

An Illinois man with a lengthy criminal history has been arrested in connection with white-powder threats sent to members of Congress, according to NBC 5 Chicago. Authorities have not released full details of the threats or the suspect's name, and it remains unclear how many lawmakers were targeted or what the powder was. The arrest follows a pattern of hoax anthrax-style letters aimed at public officials in recent years.

The mailings prompted security responses and fears of anthrax-style attacks on Capitol Hill. Officials say the suspect now faces charges, though details of his motives and the substance involved have not been disclosed.
