Research teams in Vienna and Beijing have independently built the first nuclear clocks based on thorium-229, a long-anticipated breakthrough in timekeeping. Unlike atomic clocks that use electron transitions, nuclear clocks tap energy transitions inside the atomic nucleus, promising greater stability and potential tests of whether fundamental constants of physics change over time. Scientists say the achievement could open a new era of precision measurement.
