The Curonian Spit, a 98km-long sand dune peninsula shared between Lithuania and Russia, is protected in its entirety as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its southern portion lies within the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, managed as the Kurshskaya Kosa National Park, but remains inaccessible because the border is closed. The northern Lithuanian section is protected as a national park.
