Italy's tourism minister Mazzi said tourism must be treated as an industry, claiming Italy now leads the EU in nights spent, ahead of Spain, with the sector worth more than 240 billion euros to the country. He argued tourism still lacks adequate recognition at European level, citing the absence of a dedicated EU policy framework for the sector.
