About 200,000 endangered Indiana bats spend their summers around Missouri's Mark Twain Lake, one of the species' most important roosting areas. Work crews are now thinning trees in the surrounding forest, a practice used to improve bat roosting and foraging habitat but one that raises concerns about disturbing a federally protected species during the summer season.
