Neanderthals

New coverage highlights that Neanderthals were adept woodworkers, capable of shaping wood into sophisticated tools rather than relying only on stone implements. The findings add to a growing body of evidence that Neanderthals possessed advanced technical skills and craftsmanship, challenging older views of them as primitive. Commenters in science and anthropology circles are sharing and discussing the piece, noting it further narrows the perceived cognitive gap between Neanderthals and modern humans.

History Today has published a review of 'Neanderthals Among Us' by Peter Sahlins, a book exploring how Neanderthals have been imagined and understood, including modern knowledge that many people carry Neanderthal DNA. The review is drawing attention among readers interested in human evolution, archaeology and the shifting scientific picture of our extinct relatives.

Archaeologists have reported the discovery of a wooden club and other rarely preserved artifacts, offering a glimpse into the everyday, organic-material side of Neanderthal life that stone tools alone cannot show. Wooden objects almost never survive in the archaeological record, so the find is drawing attention for revealing how Neanderthals crafted and used perishable tools.
