Rohingya

The UN refugee agency has called on Malaysia to put safeguards in place after a group of refugees was returned to Myanmar. The agency is warning that people sent back face serious risks and is urging Malaysia to allow proper refugee screening before any future deportations. The returns have drawn concern from humanitarian groups watching the treatment of Rohingya and other Myanmar nationals in the region.

Malaysia is not a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention and regularly detains and deports undocumented migrants, including Rohingya refugees fleeing Myanmar.
