The Common Desktop Environment, the classic Unix graphical desktop once standard on commercial workstations, has been made available as an open-source project hosted on SourceForge. The release lets developers examine, modify and build the vintage desktop environment themselves. Technology enthusiasts are discussing the move, with many recalling CDE's role in 1990s Unix systems and debating whether the codebase could see renewed community development.
