Researchers have developed an air-breathing electric propulsion system that scoops up molecules from Earth's upper atmosphere and uses them as propellant, allowing satellites in very low orbit to maintain altitude indefinitely without carrying finite fuel. The technology could enable longer-lived Earth observation satellites flying closer to the planet, reducing drag-related deorbiting and the need for replacement launches.
