Tony Burke

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke is moving ahead with an overhaul of Australia's student visa system, expanding the crackdown beyond visitors by closing more onshore pathways to permanent residency. New National Code changes also tighten rules on student transfers, with some students having their immigration clocks reset. Business groups have raised concerns that related visa changes, including to backpacker visas, will make staffing harder for employers already struggling with labour shortages.
