Toulon

France lost a submarine and its 52 sailors off Toulon in 1968, one of the country's worst naval tragedies. A new report explains that what made it possible to locate the wreck decades later was neither a sonar nor a diver, shedding light on how the vessel was finally found after more than 50 years underwater.

Today is the feast day of Saint Cyprian of Toulon, a 6th-century monk at the Abbey of St Victor in Marseilles who went on to serve as Bishop of Toulon in France. The commemoration is being noted alongside travel and history interest in Marseille's religious heritage.
