Volcanic

African savannah elephants visit Kitum Cave on Mount Elgon in Kenya, using their tusks to scrape volcanic rock for sodium, calcium and magnesium. Generations of herds have hollowed out the pitch-black chambers into deep mineral mines, and the behaviour is passed down within family groups. The story is recirculating among science readers fascinated by this rare example of elephants mining rock and passing knowledge across generations.
