Sudan's ongoing war, which began in April 2023 between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, has collapsed state institutions across large parts of the country. In the vacuum, community groups, mutual aid networks and local committees have taken over essential functions, from running emergency rooms and food distribution to brokering local peace deals.
