Chemists report that the beta-silicon effect enables direct hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) for enantioconvergent couplings of alpha-silyl alcohols. The finding means two different alcohol-derived fragments can be joined efficiently into a single enantioenriched product, a long-standing challenge in synthesis, with the silicon atom steering the reaction pathway. Researchers say the approach could simplify how complex chiral molecules, including potential drug candidates, are built from readily available alcohol starting materials.
