A Native Vegetation Council ruling has blocked development at Whalers Way on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula, halting Southern Launch's plans for a commercial rocket launch complex. The decision denies variations to a heritage agreement covering the site, even though the project had already secured both state and federal government planning approvals. Supporters of the space industry see the ruling as a setback for Australian launch ambitions, while it is being read as a win for native vegetation protection.
- 2Solar farms could double as havens for native plants▼Studies map microclimates beneath solar panels to help native vegetation thrive in the shadow of renewable energy
New research is mapping the microclimates created beneath solar panels, where shade and cooler temperatures could support native vegetation. Scientists hope the findings will guide the design of solar farms so renewable energy installations also restore or protect plant life, turning energy infrastructure into habitat. The approach, known as agrivoltaics or ecovoltaics, is drawing attention as solar deployment expands worldwide.
