A household energy customer in the UK has described an odd side effect of Octopus Energy's Happy Hours tariff: charging the house battery and running appliances is more cost-effective than charging their electric car. Under the tariff, if the car charges, the price per kilowatt drops from 33p to 8p, so running the home off the battery instead works out cheaper — and at times the electricity is effectively free.
