Scientists analysing the evolutionary history of 163 ant genomes, spanning most existing subfamilies, found that periods of rapid species diversification over the past 100 million years coincided with higher activity of transposable elements — DNA sequences capable of moving around the genome. The findings suggest these mobile genetic elements played a significant role in driving the evolutionary success and variety of ants.
