Vermont is replacing traditional peaking power plants by networking thousands of home batteries into a virtual power plant. During storms and periods of high demand, stored electricity in residents' basements is drawn on collectively to keep the grid stable, reducing the need for new fossil-fuel infrastructure. The approach is being closely watched as a model other states could copy to cut costs and emissions.
