Šamaš

A cuneiform prayer invoking Nabû, the Mesopotamian god of wisdom and writing, is circulating among readers of ancient history. The text, attributed to Šamaš-riḫtu-uṣur, son of Šamaš-iddina, a baker of the gods Šamaš and Aya, praises Nabû as firstborn heir who bears the tablet of destinies. Translations like this give a rare first-person glimpse into how ordinary ancient devotees addressed their gods.
