Astronomers reviewing the prospects for life on ancient exoplanets suggest that many older alien worlds may never have progressed beyond microbial mats and slime, despite having had billions of years to evolve complex organisms. The idea is that planetary conditions on older worlds could keep biology stalled at a simple stage indefinitely, meaning the absence of signals from intelligent civilizations may reflect a common evolutionary bottleneck.
