David Rieff

A new biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer by writer David Rieff takes a fresh look at the physicist, focusing on his personality and psychology rather than his scientific achievements. Rieff portrays Oppenheimer as an unusually closed, unknowable figure whose enigmatic nature puzzled and fascinated his contemporaries, framing him as 'a sphinx without a secret'.
