F-16V

A California man is accused of smuggling hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of US AI chips to China and could face decades in prison. The news lands as F-16V fighter jets arrive in Taiwan, putting the US-China rivalry in the spotlight on two fronts at once: technology export enforcement and military support for the island.

Taiwan's coast guard used water cannon against Chinese fishing boats operating near Dongsha Island in the South China Sea, as the island's newly upgraded F-16V fighter jets arrived. The moves underscore rising friction between Taipei and Beijing, with Taiwan pressing back against what it sees as grey-zone pressure while bolstering its air defences with modernised aircraft.

Taiwan's defense ministry has released images showing its fighter jets escorting newly delivered F-16V aircraft as they arrived. The publication highlights the continued buildup of Taiwan's fleet of the advanced Lockheed Martin jets, an upgrade program closely watched given rising tensions with China and repeated Chinese military activity near the island's air defense identification zone.

Taiwan has taken delivery of two F-16V fighter jets from the United States after lengthy delays, with additional aircraft still expected under the arms sale program. The upgraded jets bolster Taiwan's air defenses amid ongoing tensions with China, which regularly sends warplanes near the island and opposes US arms sales to Taipei.

The first F-16V fighter jets ordered by Taiwan from the United States in 2019 have arrived on the island. The delivery comes amid heightened tensions with China and growing concerns in Taiwan that American support could be wavering. Washington insists its policy toward Taipei remains unchanged, and the arrival of the advanced jets is being watched as a signal of continued US commitment.
