An American Cold War-era reconnaissance satellite, nicknamed after actress Farrah Fawcett, has apparently broken apart in orbit. The event is drawing attention because a satellite shattering can create a cloud of debris that threatens other spacecraft in similar orbits, adding to growing concerns about space junk and the safety of satellites and crewed missions.

The article sheds light on spacecraft whose existence and missions were kept secret for years, drawing attention from space enthusiasts and intelligence historians debating what the satellites were designed to do and how their operations remained hidden so long.

A declassified Cold War-era US spy satellite has fragmented in orbit, creating a debris field in space. The satellite, reportedly nicknamed after actress Farrah Fawcett, broke apart decades after its original mission. Space watchers are discussing the incident and what it means for the growing orbital debris problem around Earth.
