Protesters from the Mexican Union of Electricians decapitated a statue of former president Felipe Calderón. The union holds a long-standing grievance against Calderón, whose 2009 liquidation of the state electricity company Luz y Fuerza del Centro cost thousands of electricians their jobs. Calderón, president from 2006 to 2012, also launched the militarised 'drug war' blamed for years of spiralling violence in Mexico.
