Matthijs Quast

The Dutch explorer Matthijs Quast, who died on this day in 1641, is being remembered for his several voyages to East Asia. He is best known for an unsuccessful expedition to search for islands said to lie east of Japan, a quest that ultimately failed to find the mythical lands. The anniversary has prompted renewed interest in his role in 17th-century Dutch maritime exploration.
