Mutus Liber

A 1677 alchemical text known as the Mutus Liber, or 'Silent Book', is drawing renewed attention. The wordless work tells its story entirely through a sequence of engravings depicting mysterious laboratory procedures, and has puzzled readers for centuries. A newly published online collection traces the book's transformations across editions and interpretations, inviting fresh debate about what its silent images actually instruct.
