Northeast Brazil

Attention is on the list of deputies elected in the state of Alagoas, Brazil, as interest builds around congressional representation ahead of the 2026 general elections. Regional media are already profiling candidates and elected officials across the Northeast, including neighbouring states like Pernambuco, as voters and commentators weigh who will represent them in Brasília.

A new Quaest poll is drawing attention to the heated contest between Recife mayor João Campos and Pernambuco governor Raquel Lyra, two of the Northeast's most prominent rising political figures. Coverage, including a report by Veja, highlights how narrow the gap between them is, fueling speculation ahead of the next electoral cycle in Brazil.

Brazil's Federal Police has seized more than R$30 million in connection with electoral crimes during 2026, according to Agência Brasil. The report has drawn attention in the Northeast region, where searches for 'nordeste' have risen. Authorities say the seizures are part of ongoing operations ahead of the elections, targeting illicit campaign financing and related offences.
