OpenVDDK

A cloud architect has developed OpenVDDK, a free replacement for VMware's VDDK toolkit that Broadcom has restricted. The open-source tool allows virtual machine migrations to continue despite Broadcom's access lockdown, supporting companies seeking to move away from VMware. The project is drawing attention as organisations look for ways to exit VMware without licensing obstacles.

OpenVDDK is being presented as a no-cost, open replacement for VMware's VDDK, the SDK used for virtual disk data protection and backup integration. The timing points to ongoing interest in VMware alternatives and licensing costs following Broadcom's acquisition of VMware, as IT teams look to cut dependencies on paid tooling in 2026.
