River North

China and North Korea have officially opened the New Yalu River Bridge, which links the two countries across the Yalu River near Dandong. The crossing had stood unfinished for roughly 12 years after construction stalled, making its opening a long-awaited step in cross-border connectivity and a possible sign of warming ties and expanded trade between Beijing and Pyongyang.

China and North Korea are moving ahead with a bridge linking the two countries, adding to the handful of crossings over the Yalu River between them. The project underscores deepening economic and political ties between Beijing and Pyongyang, and is drawing attention for what it suggests about trade, sanctions enforcement, and the two neighbours' increasingly close relationship.

A claim is circulating that Ottawa was the first city in North America to be built on a river, described as a fascinating piece of history. The claim is dubious: numerous North American cities, including Quebec City and several Indigenous settlements, were established on rivers long before Ottawa's founding in the 19th century. Little engagement has followed so far.

China and North Korea are set to formally open the New Yalu River Bridge on Thursday, according to Chinese state media. The crossing between Dandong and Sinuiju was built years ago but sat unused amid border closures and pandemic restrictions, and its opening signals a gradual thaw in cross-border trade and travel.

A new bridge linking China and North Korea is set to finally open, more than a decade after its planned completion. The crossing, built to connect the two countries across the Yalu River, sat unused for years amid delays on the North Korean side. Its opening is being read as a sign of deepening economic and political ties between Beijing and Pyongyang.
