Pope Julius II, one of the most consequential pontiffs of the Renaissance, was elected on this day in 1503. Known as the 'Warrior Pope', he led military campaigns to consolidate the Papal States and commissioned Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling and the rebuilding of St Peter's Basilica. He also gave his name to the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine region near Avignon, where his family's castle still stands.
