A two-kilometre drilling project in Vocca, in Italy's Piedmont region, is giving scientists a rare chance to study material from the depths of the Earth, including the terrestrial mantle. La Stampa reports that the excavations could shed light on the composition and behaviour of the planet's interior, drawing attention to what is an unusually deep research site for Italy.
