Conservationists are warning that this year's hot and dry weather could cause a butterfly 'population crash'. Prolonged drought and heat can kill caterpillars, dry out food plants and reduce breeding success, hitting populations hard. Wildlife watchers are being encouraged to record butterfly numbers to help assess the scale of the damage.
