counter-drone weapons

Military personnel are developing weapons that use artificial intelligence to counter drone threats, according to Defense News Weekly coverage dated September 29, 2026. The report highlights how armed forces are turning to AI-driven systems to detect and defeat enemy drones. Counter-drone technology has become a priority as cheap drones increasingly shape modern battlefields, and details of the programs discussed remain limited.

Russia has reportedly upgraded its Shahed-style attack drones with jet engines, giving them higher speed that makes them harder for Ukrainian air defenses to intercept. The development matters because these cheap, mass-produced drones have become a core weapon in Russia's campaign against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, and existing counter-drone systems were largely built to stop slower propeller-driven variants.

A Ukrainian unmanned ground vehicle has reportedly caught or netted a Russian FPV drone during an engagement on the battlefield. The incident highlights counter-drone tactics being developed by Ukrainian forces, using robotic systems to intercept cheap aerial drones that have become one of the deadliest weapons of the war.

A Ukrainian unmanned ground vehicle has been shown shooting down a Russian FPV attack drone using a net gun. The robot reportedly detected the drone as it moved in to strike and neutralised it with a net launcher, demonstrating a growing counter-drone tactic on the battlefield. The incident highlights how both sides are racing to defend ground systems against cheap first-person-view drones, now one of the deadliest weapons in the war.

Businessmen in China have demonstrated counter-drone equipment to Chinese military officials, showcasing weapons including net launchers designed to bring down unmanned aircraft. The display highlights the country's growing focus on anti-drone technology, as drones play an increasingly prominent role in modern warfare and civilian security concerns. The demonstration has drawn attention for its direct engagement between private suppliers and military leadership.

The Bars interceptor, a missile-drone that struck Moscow early in its use, has been retooled as an air-defence weapon designed to shoot down Iranian-style jet-powered Shahed drones attacking Ukraine. Reports say production has been scaled to around 2,000 units per month, marking a shift from deep-strike use to counter-drone defence. The move reflects Ukraine's growing reliance on cheap interceptor drones as a complement to scarce air-defence missiles.
