Divers in Indonesia's Gili Islands, off Lombok, are posting striking underwater photos of cuttlefish seen while scuba diving around Gili Trawangan and Gili Air. Researchers have produced the first genetically modified cuttlefish, a breakthrough that reportedly took six years of work and around 4,000 failed embryos before success. The achievement matters because cuttlefish eggs are notoriously difficult to manipulate, making cephalopods one of the last major animal groups without a working transgenic method. It could open new research into gene function, neural biology and evolution in these highly intelligent marine animals.
