Researchers report the creation of a monolayer van der Waals kagome lattice, a two-dimensional material with a geometry that supports flat electronic bands. Such flat bands enhance electron correlations, and observing them at high temperatures could enable exotic quantum states, including unusual superconductivity and magnetism, in atomically thin devices. The work, published in Nature, is drawing attention as a step toward practical flat-band materials that operate without extreme cooling.
