In Nigeria, local residents are reportedly breaking apart concrete drainage structures with stones to extract the steel reinforcement bars inside, which they then sell to scrap metal dealers. The practice highlights the value of scrap metal amid economic hardship, but also raises concerns about the destruction of public drainage infrastructure, which could worsen flooding in affected areas.
Why now: The striking image of people destroying public infrastructure for scrap metal resonates amid ongoing discussion of Nigeria's economic hardship.
