Thunderbird has released a native, open-source email app for iPhone and iPad, extending the Mozilla-affiliated mail client to Apple's mobile platform for the first time. Commenters in Italy are framing the launch as a win for independent software and digital sovereignty, arguing that autonomous, non-corporate tools strengthen technological self-reliance and offer a credible alternative to dominant email apps on iOS.
Why now: The release of a long-awaited open-source Thunderbird app on iOS gives fresh momentum to debates about digital sovereignty and independent mobile software.
