Biljana Plavsic, a former president of Republika Srpska and one of the most prominent political figures of the Bosnian war, has died. She was convicted by the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague for persecution during the 1992-95 conflict and was released in 2009 after serving most of her sentence. Her death prompts renewed debate over wartime accountability in the Balkans.
Why now: Her wartime role and war crimes conviction make her death a moment of renewed reflection and debate about the Bosnian war.
