Taiwan to open new office in Phoenix

Original: taiwan

Taiwan's foreign minister is set to attend the opening of a new office in Phoenix, in the United States. The visit underscores Taiwan's efforts to expand its unofficial representation in the US, a move likely to draw attention given Beijing's sensitivity to any steps that suggest heightened official ties between Taipei and American cities or governments.

Why now: Taiwan's expanding unofficial US presence is a sensitive flashpoint in US-China relations.
