The European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope has produced images showing what is described as a new planet in the process of forming around a young star 440 light-years from Earth. The protoplanet, apparently comparable in scale to Jupiter, is visible within the disc of gas and dust surrounding its host star, offering a rare direct look at planetary birth.
Why now: New observations from ESO's Very Large Telescope showing a planet mid-formation are a striking and rare astronomical milestone.
