Hundreds of French high school students confronted police during protests over the government's education budget, with footage showing officers retreating as the crowd advanced. Demonstrators are angry that the education budget rises by only 1.7% (€1.2 billion), below the 3.4% inflation rate, which they say amounts to a real-terms cut. More than 5,000 arrests have reportedly been made amid the unrest.

Why now: Fresh protests over the below-inflation education budget are generating dramatic images of police retreating from schoolchildren, driving attention to the government's spending plan.
