Plague death triggers quarantine in Russia's Irkutsk region

Original: Plague death triggers quarantine, mask mandates in Russia's Irkutsk region

A death from plague in Russia's Irkutsk region in Siberia has prompted local authorities to impose quarantine measures and mask mandates. The Kyiv Independent reported the outbreak measures, which echo pandemic-era restrictions and have drawn attention given plague's rarity in the region. The case has raised questions about how the infection was contracted and whether further spread is possible.

Why now: A rare plague death prompting quarantine-style restrictions evokes strong memories of the Covid-19 pandemic and raises public health concerns.
