Russia has confirmed the death of Roman Syromiatnikov, accused of torturing Ukrainian prisoners of war. He was killed in an explosion on Friday, October 2, in the Tula region of Russia. Ukrainian outlets describe him as a war criminal, and the killing is being linked by commentators to a broader pattern of attacks on figures implicated in abuses against Ukrainian captives.
Why now: The targeted killing of a figure accused of war crimes against Ukrainian POWs is striking amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
