Australia and Turkey criticised over coal while seeking to host UN climate summit
Original: Australia and Turkey criticised for hosting UN climate conference while embracing coal By Adam Morton in Nadi, Fiji Glob
Campaign group 350.org has criticised Australia and Turkey, both vying to host the UN Cop31 climate conference, for continuing to embrace coal. The group is urging prospective hosts to announce a firm coal phase-out date and national roadmaps for moving away from fossil fuels, arguing their coal expansion undermines their credibility to lead global climate talks.
Why now: Cop31 hosting bids are in the news and campaigners are calling out the contradiction between the candidates' coal policies and their climate diplomacy.
