"Wine in the Wilderness" Revival Sparks Debate Over Black Womanhood
Original: “Wine in the Wilderness” Turns an Artist’s Loft Into a Reckoning Over Who Gets to Define a Black Woman
A new production of Alice Childress's play "Wine in the Wilderness" stages its story in an artist's loft, framing the drama as a reckoning over who has the authority to define a Black woman. The revival is drawing attention to Childress's 1969 work and its enduring questions about representation, respectability and identity within the Black community.
Why now: A current staging of a classic Black feminist play is prompting fresh conversation about its themes of identity and representation.
