Brazil election heads to runoff as Bolsonaro edges Lula
Original: Brazil presidential election heads to runoff as Bolsonaro leads Lula
Brazil's presidential election will go to a second round after neither Jair Bolsonaro nor Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won an outright majority, with Bolsonaro leading the first-round count. The result defies pre-election polls that showed Lula comfortably ahead, and sets up a decisive runoff vote between the incumbent president and the former leftist president.
Why now: The outcome defied opinion polls that had widely expected Lula to win outright, making the runoff a major surprise.
