Brazil presidential race heads to second round run-off

Original: Brazil’s presidential race goes to second round as Flávio Bolsonaro leads incumbent Lula

Brazil's presidential election is set for a second round after no candidate secured an outright victory. The Guardian reports that Flávio Bolsonaro is leading the incumbent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, setting up a run-off contest. The result marks a striking turn in Brazilian politics, with the Bolsonaro family name again at the centre of the country's presidential contest and Lula's re-election bid now under real pressure.

Why now: A Bolsonaro leading sitting president Lula into a run-off is a major surprise in Brazilian politics, driving broad interest in the election's outcome.
