A science writer is drawing attention to the evolutionary history of camelids, the family that includes camels, llamas and alpacas, tying it to Charles Darwin's descriptions of giant llama-like megafauna that once roamed South America. The discussion links a video overview of camelid evolution with an article on Darwin's so-called giant llama and the legacy of ancient megafauna, prompting conversation about how these animals evolved and spread between the Americas.

Why now: Renewed interest in camelid evolutionary history after new commentary connecting Darwin's fossil finds to modern camelids.
