Bolsonaro edges past Lula as Brazil vote goes to run-off
Original: Bolsonaro edges past Lula as nail-biter Brazil vote goes to a run-off
Brazil's presidential election is heading to a second round after incumbent Jair Bolsonaro narrowly finished ahead of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, defying most polls that had favoured Lula. Neither candidate reached the threshold to win outright, leaving Brazilians to decide the closely contested race in a run-off later this month.
Why now: The first-round result defied expectations and leaves the outcome of Brazil's pivotal presidential election unresolved.
